Ashley DuBose is The Voice

I've been waiting, patiently this season, for someone I could get up off the couch and cheer for... and along came Ashley DuBose.

I've been waiting even longer for a fresh sounding Lauren Hill, India Arie, Angie Stone, Erykah Badu melé.

And then there was The Voice...

The fact that this women took on a Rihanna song... NeoSouled it... did it justice... and rocked the house with her cool rasp, is needless to say, enviable.

I believe her when she speaks. I connect with her. I see the love she has for her daughter... it makes me appreciate and love my baby girl even more. Watching such a young, beautiful and inspiring woman (I want to call her a baby, however, the fact she has her own, I suppose that makes her grown'), drives me to keep following my own dreams. Her story, hustle and pursuit of happiness is one of strength. Her desire to do it for her baby girl vs billboard pipe dreams... makes me a fan and huge support.

I'm very excited for her, and no matter what happens on the voice, she has a new fan.

Check out her audition:

From the bottom of my heart, I'm wishing this Savvy Sistah the best of luck!

Much Love,
Miss Kay

Can someone please tell me about that jacket? Must have one!

Beharie Keeping Sleepy Hollow Wide Awake

Sleepy Hollow has soooooo much more to offer than a real life Ichabob Crane...

Source: Pier 59 Studios

I happened to catch an episode of Sleepy Hollow last night and was so pleasantly surprise. It's no secret that I love everything and anything FairyFiction, but when lead roles are cast by Savvy Sistah's?

Nicole Beharie stole my attention, and brought me into her world... and completely had me wigged out by The Sandman. Hope the show does well, cuz I'm so looking forward to seeing more of her.

Much Love,
Miss Kay

Wayne Brady - Forever Dependable

Caught like maybe 5 seconds of some show today... and who do I see but Wayne Brady! For a brief moment I asked myself where the hell he's been lately. After a quick look online, I needed ask where the hell I've been.

A master in his own right of all things comedy, thank you Wayne for keeping it classy, funny and 'grown. Without a doubt, you'll always be our go to smile man.

Wishing you the best of luck with the return of "Who's Line is it Anyway?" on The CW.

Much love,

Do I have what it takes to be Self-Published?

I think I'm pretty excited about bringing this little piece back to the market. After getting my edits back, and trying to CreateSpace 'format' it, I got totally overwhelmed and wanted to completely abandon writing all together; even after some key people really pitched in to help me make it work. The painstaking process of making it a reality made my blood turn and give up hope.

Writing it was the easy part. This self-publishing thing? Nightmare!!! But I'm up for it. I'm here to prove that it is a viable and reasonable way to cut your piece in the world of storytelling. And I need to prove to myself that it can't really be that hard :s

Shall we then?

Let me reintroduce you to my Freshman project:

Love Lessons

First step I guess is to determine where the hell I fell off. My writing talisman? Tarot. Why not? Everyone has their "thing" that helps keep them grounded and motivated. Mine is Spirit and her message as related through Tarot. Without further ado...

As guided by Tarot: 4 of Pentacles ~ invest in making a stable environment. There is a need to bring control to your current situation. Focus on the people and not the perceived 'financial gain'.

I love when the message is loud and clear and just happens to be exactly the one I needed. As you can see, my focus for the next couple of days needs to be on the following 3 steps to get back on track:

1. Make a stable and viable writing/publishing environment. So need to do that as my physical, online and mental state is a mess as it relates to being a professional writer.

2. I think my first step is to control all things physical... clean up my notebook, stickies and organize the file folder that holds all things Love Lessons.

3. The characters are real, and they need to be brought to life. They need to have a voice. And it needs to be good. I need to feel in my heart that they are "good enough", and the financial reward will follow.

1. Have you ever gone back to a project after abandoning it? If yes, did you feel like you let your characters down?

Bey, Jen & Alicia ~ Hot or Not?!?

Seriously, is anyone really surprised that the power went out at the game?  I mean come on, with a performance like Bey's, I'm surprised there wasn't a city wide outage!  I'll be the first to admit my eye squints every time I hear her name.  I know this is newcomer blogging suicide, however, I just don't get all the Beyoncé hype.  She's good, but there is definitely... okay, let's just leave it at the fact that prior to this performance, I've always seen her as good.

I'm not hating, I went to a Destiny's Child concert and loved every second of it.  I've used the term 'bootylicious' in many a conversations.  I just, kinda turned a leaf I guess you could say, around the exact same time she 'turned' her girls.

Proenza-Schouler-platform-booties-BeyonceI absolutely will not be hating on Rubin Singer any time soon, thought. DAMN.  Fierce and on Fire (yes Beyoncé too), that bodysuit, inspired by Singer's "Valkyrie's Dominion" F13 collection was the only thing that needed to come out on the field on game night.  Seriously.  Stitched together by hand to body... can I get me one of these please? Vday is just around the corner, and this piece of leather and lace is exactly what we need to bring some hotness back into Feb 14th.  Red feathers and fluff, move the hell over, your time has come and gone.  Make way for some bad ass leather with a side of lace and fishnet.  And how fun were those Pebbled leather booties by Proenza Schouler?  A couple seasons to the wind already, but being up in the Great White North, I could rock these all blizzardy season long.

Well before Bey shut down the game, Jennifer Hudson did what she does... sing with a kind of power that sends shivers down the spine, finishing up with a set of goose bumps on top yo' arms.  That girl can sang.  What's beautiful and brilliant about the performance is her own personal experience with gun violence. You could see the genuine emotion and understanding as she performed with those children.  By virtue of talent, I don't think there is a way to tame down the boom, but she kept it smart and respectful, allowing the moment to not just be about her, but embracing the 26 Sandy Hook students as they represented their families and friends lost in tragedy.

With that being said, I normally would have heaved and rashed with what she was wearing.  I get it though.  It was subdued, not flashy, and again very respectful based on the situation.  Regardless, it's my blog, and what's a blog if I can't bitch about people who have it better than me, lol  That leather top, gross. I really just think it's so terrible and ill fitted that it truly looks to me like pleather.  She is so striking and soooooo talented, why oh why, pray tell, tell my why the buttons down the front?  'America the Beautiful', is it an homage to the navy or something?  I don't know, I just don't like any of it.  Maybe each piece as a separate, especially them fancy ass shoes, but together?  C'est terrible!

Alicia Keys: Super Bowl 2013 National Anthem - Watch Now!

Ms Alicia Keys, always sexy.  Always smart.  And I am still loving the bob, it is such a polished look!  I have to admit, I don't know that complimented her more, the white Yamaha or the dynamically spectacular red Alia dress.  There was something old Hollywood and loungy about the dress that looked so smooth on her.  With the slicked back and aggressively parted hair and her 'lengthy' performance of the 'Star Spangled Banner', it almost felt like she pulled off a bit of a tribute to Black History Month.  There was something so Dorothy Dandridge about her, and yet she was all Alicia too. Love her and loved the look.

There was a lot of hotness going around at this year's Super Bowl, with special 'unintentional' tribute to some of the most beautiful and powerful black female entertainers of all time stealing the show.  Well done ladies, and thank you NFL for a fantastic show.

Love and Light,
Miss A
